For the third year in a row, ICSE students have tasted victory in a battle against the state government. But they question the cost of it. "It is a victory for our students indeed, but at what cost? Why should some students of the same state be treated as outcasts? Even as the Bombay high court's decision turned out in our favour, students have been left anxious till the last moment," said Meera Isaacs, principal, Cathedral and John Connon School, Fort.
Many city principals voiced their opinion against the state government making policy without consulting the other boards. "If the government intends to bring about a positive change in the education system by coming up with new policies every year, they should take these policies to the other boards too. This way, all the last-minute tension and anxiety would be spared," said Perin Bagli, principal, Activity School, Pedder Road. She also added her concern for SSC students: "SSC students will get such a blow when they see their overall marks fall now that the best-five policy has been struck down."
Though the government's latest policies are supposed to alleviate stress levels, many agreed that the best-five policy did the opposite. "The stress levels of students, parents as well as school and college authorities went up because of the last-minute drama," added Isaacs. Many also agreed that the fiasco could have been avoided if the best-five policy had been implemented for ICSE students too. "No one would have gone to court if the ICSE students were to avail of the same policy as SSC students. Since the state government wouldn't agree to this, the rest followed," said PAUL MACHADO, principal, CAMPION SCHOOL Cooperage.
"It is sad for the aspirations and hopes of SSC students. They will now have to accept lower percentages. Even as our students are rejoicing, we are already worried about what new policy the state will throw our way next year," said Carl Laurie, principal, Christ Church School, Byculla.
