It gives us great pleasure to announce the appointment of RAHUL MEHROTRA ExCampionite class of 1974 as tenured Professor of Urban Design and Planning and as Chair of the Department of Urban Planning and Design at Harvard University, both appointments starting in July 2010

Mehrotra is a practicing architect, urban designer, and educator. His firm, RMA Architects, was founded in 1990 in Mumbai and has designed and executed projects that include houses, institutes, and office buildings.

In addition, the practice has been involved in conservation and master planning projects in the city of Mumbai, engaging diverse issues at varying scales. The firm recently finished a campus for Magic Bus (an NGO that works with street children), the restoration of the Chowmahalla Palace in Hyderabad, and (with the Taj Mahal Conservation Collaborative) a conservation master plan for the Taj Mahal. The firm is currently working on a master plan for the conservation of the historic site of Jaisalmer in Rajasthan and on a village for 100 elephants and their caretakers in Jaipur. The projects of his firm <http://www.rmaarchitects.com/> have been published in various architectural journals in India and abroad.

Mehrotra has written and lectured extensively on architecture, conservation, and urban planning in Mumbai. He is a co-author of Bombay - The Cities Within, which covers the city's urban history from the 1600s to the present; Banganga Sacred Tank; Public Places Bombay; Anchoring a City Line, a history of the city's commuter railway; and Bombay to Mumbai - Changing Perspectives. His other publications include Conserving an Image Center - The Fort Precinct in Bombay; based on this study and its recommendations, the historic Fort area was declared a conservation precinct in 1995. He has also written books on the Victoria Terminus Station of Mumbai, a UNESCO World Heritage Site; on the impact of conservation legislation there; and most recently, on the city's Art Deco buildings.

Mehrotra has long been actively involved in civic and urban affairs in Mumbai, having served on commissions on historic conservation and environmental issues, with various neighbourhood and citizens groups, and, from 1994 to 2004, as Executive Director of the Urban Design Research Institute, of which he is now a Trustee.

Mehrotra studied at the School of Architecture, Ahmedabad, and graduated with a master's degree in Urban Design from the GSD. He has taught at the University of Michigan (2003-2007) and at the School of Architecture and Urban Planning at MIT (2007-2010).

Mohsen  Mostafavi  Dean, Graduate School of Design Harvard University warmly welcomed Rahul to the ranks of the senior faculty of the GSD.
