Don't Want To Continue With Arts? Try BCom
Posted on 17th May, 2010

Now all arts and science students, irrespective of whichever subjects they may have studied in Std XII, are eligible for admission to Bachelor of Commerce (BCom).

In a bid to make admissions more flexible, the academic council of the Mumbai University changed the eligibility criterion on Wednesday.

“Earlier, students either had to be commerce pass or they had to clear Std XII with three subjects related to commerce like maths, statistics or economics. But now any student can apply for BCom,” said Mumbai University registrar K Venkatramani.

“The decision was taken for the benefit of arts and science students. For subjects like Bachelor of Management Studies (BMS), Bachelor of Mass Media (BMM) or even Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (BSc-IT), we don’t have such eligibility criterion. So why should there be any for BCom?” said Venkatramani.

Indu Shahani, principal of HR College, Churchgate, said the decision will helps students who may be looking for a change. “Students are very young when they are in Std XI and may not be able to make up their minds at that age. So, it’s a good move.”  KC College principal Manju Nichani called it a progressive step.

“We need to change our perspective and not get compartmentalised. Students may have to work a little hard to catch up with some topics in commerce, but the decision implies greater freedom and shows that the system is opening up.” The decision is applicable from next academic year.
